TRG Management Solutions, LLC exists today all thanks to a very special horse named Riley.
In early 2000, our family began taking an annual summer vacation to a wonderful ranch in the mountains of Big Sky, Montana. Nestled near the Gallatin River and close to Yellowstone National Park, it was the perfect place for our family to relax and connect. No TV, no phone service, and no internet.
On our first visit to the ranch, my wife and I decided to venture out and enjoy the majestic mountain environment on horseback. She was an experienced rider, I was not. That’s where I first met Riley and the idea for TRG Management Solutions began to emerge.
Riley was a strong, sturdy horse with significant experience traversing the trails of Big Sky. What struck me at the outset was his calm, steady demeanor. It was evident from the start that he could sense my inexperience, but he never flinched or reacted negatively to my awkward commands. Instead, he was steadfast in his mission. His confidence was ever-present as he never bucked or froze at unexpected encounters or obstacles—unlike other horses on the ride. Many times, the wrangler would have Riley (and me) take the lead position so other horses would follow Riley’s actions. He was a true North Star, seemingly always envisioning the right forward path.

What impressed me most about Riley as I got to know him over the successive years, was his willingness to let me explore my horsemanship skills, but with a keen perspective of knowing when I was getting ahead of myself. He would let me gallop but sensed quickly when I was getting beyond my capabilities and would take over in a way that made me feel as if I still had a modicum of control.
As I reflected on my time with Riley, I realized the synergy we developed in our interactions is what leadership should be about. It’s about having the experiences that allow you to understand the vision and path forward in a way that builds confidence in others as they develop their skills.
It’s about allowing others to take the lead and chart their course but having the presence and mindfulness to know when they need help.
It’s not about having all the answers, but developing the insight, perspective, and experience to address unexpected interruptions or obstacles that hinder forward momentum.
I remember turning to my wife at some point and stating emphatically- “If I ever start a consulting business, I’m going to name it after Riley.” Hence, 22 years later the formation of The Riley Group —TRG Management Solutions, LLC.
